BUTCH CRAFT

KEEL COLLECTION

MOSS GALLERY NEW YORK

The Keel family currently comprises of two coffee tables, a bench, a dining table and a stool/side table (September 2010). The initial thought behind the project came from more traditional Norwegian furniture that utilises simple construction methods and ways of assembly. A very satisfactory hands on way of assembling a piece of furniture with simple tools and little fixings results in sturdy pieces that, in a domestic situation, often could be taken apart again either to move or repair- a luxury rare to find in much modern furniture. I found that this semi utilitarian (or simply useful?) style of furniture also echoed systems found in boats, where objects need to move, shift or in various ways ‘flat pack’, and so the idea of the keel found in smaller sailing boats made its way into the project. The collection is part of the 'Make Me'/ Butch Craft exhibition at Moss Gallery Ny.

The modular, slot-leg system utilised in the Keel series was inspired by the drop down keels in small sailboats.
